Cordilleran athlete becomes first Filipina Muaythai World Champion

Baguio City, Philippines – “History has been made!”

The Muaythai Association of the Philippines (MAP) exclaimed as it announced online that Islay Erika Bomogao becomes the first Filipina and the second Filipino athlete to clinch the world title in the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) 2023 World Muaythai Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand last week.

The first Filipino to win gold in IFMA World is Phillip Delarmino. He succeeded in his bout in 2021.

Bomogao, a native of Benguet and a product of Baguio-based stable Team Lakay, outlasted Camilla Danielsson of Sweden in the 45-kilogram category of the senior elite.

The Cordilleran athlete likewise finished as a silver medalist in the Women's Elite Wai Kru (boxing dance) category.

MAP commended Bomogao on her successful world title bid, saying she has been an inspiration to all the young women who aspire to be champions in the sport of Muaythai.

“Her dedication and hard work have paid off, and she has proven that Filipinas are a force to be reckoned with in the world of combat sports… With her remarkable skills and unwavering determination, she has shattered the glass ceiling and made a name for herself on the world stage. She has truly set the bar high for female athletes everywhere, showing that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible,” the national association said.

“The Philippine muaythai community could not be more prouder of Islay Erika Bomogao's incredible achievement. She has shown the world that the Philippines is a powerhouse when it comes to combat sports and that Filipino athletes are among the best in the world,” it added.

The local government of Baguio likewise recognized Bomogao during the flag ceremony earlier today, May 15.
