Cordilleran baker wins international bake-off competition in London



Mt. Province, Philippines – A baker from Sabangan, Mountain Province recently received international recognition with her Chelsea bun made with Philippine local ingredients.


Phoebe Kate Bastian Gut-omen participated in the May 2023 World Chelsea Bun Awards Bake-off Competition held in London and won the Non-tasting or Instagram Category.


The World Chelsea Bun Awards was launched in 2019 by the Partridges, an independent family-run store to revive the baking of Chelsea Buns which is said to be patronized by English people including the British Royal Family like King George II and King George III back in the 18th century.

The competition was also being conducted by the Partridges to help raise funds and awareness for a local charity. The store chose The Children's Surgery Foundation as the charity for this year.


Among the judges for the 2023 World Chelsea Bun Awards Bake-off Competition include Her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent.


After her win, Gut-omen, in a Facebook post, conveyed wish to join the Great British Bake off.


Gut-omen is said to be a beneficiary of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Pangkabuhayan sa Pagbangon at Ginhawa program.
