Cordilleran Miss Universe PH bets pay homage to local farmers in nat'l costume tilt

Benguet, Philippines – The three Cordilleran queens competing in Miss Universe Philippines took to the national pageant stage to pay homage to the local farmers who form the backbone of the economy.

In line with this year’s theme, “Ani” or harvest, the contenders from the region drew inspiration from rich facets of agriculture for their ensembles showcased in the national costume competition held Thursday night, May 04, at Leyte Normal University.

The beauty queens were rated based on Originality and Creativity (50%), Theme Interpretation (30%), and Visual Impact (20%).

Benguet

Benguet’s Joemay Leo wore the salad costume designed by Lhee Wel Tokia. It is inspired by the province’s Adivay Festival.

The costume, according to Leo, consists of three main parts namely, the “kayabang” or big basket which symbolizes the bountiful harvest in the province and also the provincial symbol; the body suit covered by the traditional tattoo design of Benguet which personifies good health, good fortune, harmony, and unity among all Cordillerans; and the “halampay” or the hand-painted piece crafted to pay tribute to all of the farmers and the whole Igorot tribe for all the hard works done to provide food for everyone."

Garnering 93.9 percent, Leo came second to Airissh Ramos of Eastern Samar who scored 95.2 percent. The top winners, including the third placer Southern Leyte’s Kimberly Escartin, received a cash prize of P50,000 each.

Baguio

Krishnah Marie Gravidez representing Baguio City, meanwhile, wore “kayabang” (basket) filled with the world-renowned strawberry, among other crops produced by Baguio farmers. Her ensemble symbolizes love and passion.

“This costume is not only a beautiful showcase of Baguio City’s beauty but also a celebration of its people, their resilience, resourcefulness, and deep connection to the land,” she said.

Gravidez was able to take home P100,000 after having been proclaimed the “Tingog ng Filipina – Luzon” for exemplifying the beauty, values, and brilliance that a modern and empowered Filipina must possess in order to inspire others.

Apayao

Kristeen Mae Boccang of Apayao wore the "Durarakit" costume designed by Vinze Asuncion and co-designer Prime Aldrine. It displays the celebration of the rich Isnag culture and a tribute to the farmers.

“This Filipiniana silhouette is a modern take on the traditional Isnag attire for women… This costume also depicts the captivating story of “Durarakit” or shaman by integrating some items used in rituals,” Boccang stated.

Apayao’s rice industry was displayed in the beauty queen’s attire.
