Cordilleran soldier is next AFP Chief


Ifugao, Philippines - Lieutenant General Romeo Brawner Jr. from Ifugao will be the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).


This was announced by the Presidential Communications Office, Wednesday, July 19.


LtGen Brawner is the third AFP chief under the Marcos Jr. administration.


Brawner, a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Makatao” Class of 1989, and a native of Kiangan, Ifugao, was raised in Baguio City.


He will be replacing General Andres Centino who will take post as Presidential Adviser on the West Philippine Sea.


At present, LtGen Brawner is the Commanding General of the Philippine Army.

Accomplishments of LtGen Brawner


Brawner is top 2 of the graduating class of the PMA in 1989. He served the army in various capacities since then.


Under his leadership, the 4th Infantry Division was able to neutralize high-ranking communist terrorist group personalities in Northern Mindanao and Caraga regions which include Jorge Madlos alias Ka Oris, head of the New People's Army's National Operational Command.


With Ka Oris' death, it demoralized their group resulting in a series of surrenders and confiscation of firearms in the country.

Awards and Recognition


Further, Brawner, during his military schooling, is also the best in his class having topped his Special Forces Operations Course, Intelligence Officer Course, and the AFP Comptrollership Course.


In 2013, he was given 'The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers' (TOPS) award by the Metrobank Foundation and Rotary Club of Makati.


During the term of President Rodrigo Duterte, he was also conferred the Lapu-lapu Award while in March this year, he was recognized in the US, being inducted into the US Army War College (UASWC) International Fellows Hall of Fame in honor of his efforts in holding the highest command position in the Philippine Army (PA).


In appreciation of his exceptional meritorious work as the Commanding General of PA, particularly in ensuring that the PA stays prepared, poised, and trained for all missions, he was also awarded in the US the Legion of Merit - Degree of Commander.


Legion of Merit is the only US military medal that has distinct ranks, and the first US medal awarded to foreign nationals.
