Tanudan, Kalinga – With the intention to pacify his sister and her husband, a man ended up shooting the couple during a heated argument in Upper Lubo late evening on September 12.

Based on the initial police investigation, Tanudan Acting Police Chief Police Lieutenant Manuel Sabado narrated that the victims identified as Joey Gobyang, 29, and Carmen Gobyang, 33, were having an altercation around 11 o’clock in the evening.

This prompted family members and the suspect to intervene and appease the couple. However, the situation worsened with the presence of family members.

“Agap-apa da [victims], mapan da kanu aganawa[suspects and some family members] ngem diay approach da madi,” he said, adding that the bickering couple suddenly was on the same side against the suspect and some of their family members.

It was then that the suspect who is Carmen’s brother, Milandro Maslang, 40, was triggered to pull his short firearm when Carmen shouted, “kon.. Gungatom di kani [Yes. Kill us.].”

Right then, the suspect shot his sister Carmen on the forehead and her husband Joey on his temple.

Joey died on the spot while Carmen was rushed to Kalinga Provincial Hospital, but was later referred to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center, where she was reported to be in comatose state. Report on her death is still being verified.

Meanwhile, the responding personnel of Tanudan police station arrested Maslang, who didn’t resist being brought to the police station. Moreover, a Cal .45 pistol with 4 unfired cartridges was recovered from his possession.

Further, the police recovered 3 empty cartridges for Cal .45 from the crime scene. These were subjected to ballistics examination at Kalinga Provincial Crime Laboratory.

At around 11:30 AM on September 14, a murder case under NPS docket Nr. 11-INQ-211-00020 was filed against the suspect through an inquest proceeding at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
