Bangued, Abra - A notable increase in crime incidents was recorded in Abra in the past two months of 2025, prompting authorities to further enhance security protocols in the province.

During the emergency meeting of the province’s Peace and Order Council (PPO) on March 17, Abra Police Provincial Director PCOL. Gilbert Fati-ig reported that there were 69 crimes recorded in the province from January 12 to March 12 this year.

The figure is 32.7 percent higher compared to the 52 incidents in the same period last year.

Of the total incidents, the town of Bangued listed the highest with 28, followed by Bucay with 9, while Pilar recorded 7.

The other municipalities also saw varying levels of criminal activity.

According to Fati-ig, crimes in the province tend to happen during certain hours. Violent crimes such as murder and rape were more frequent between 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., and again from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Daytime crimes, meanwhile, were particularly noticeable between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

In response to the problem, Fati-ig said the PPO will conduct several new security initiatives. These include the enhancement of police checkpoints, installation of CCTVs in areas where crimes mostly occurred, and bolstering anti-insurgency efforts within the province.

These actions aim to deter criminal activities within the province.

Said PPOC meeting was presided over by Acting Abra Governor Russell Bragas, which also aimed to discuss the implementation of peace and order initiatives for the upcoming national and local election.

Other key attendees include Police Regional Office-Cordillera Director PBGen. David Peredo, 501st Infantry Brigade Commander BGen. Dean Mark Mamaril, 24th Infantry Battalion Commander LtCol. Jose Wilfredo Panes, DILG-Abra Director Kristoffer Dave Alvarez, La Paz Mayor JB Bernos, among others.
