Crops, tents destroyed in Baguio City hailstorm

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Baguio City, Philippines – Pellets of frozen rain suddenly hit Baguio City and other towns of Benguet province at around 3 PM on Sunday, October 09, 2022, with the people caught off-guard.

A resident relayed they were not expecting the hailstorm as they were experiencing good weather before it hit them.

The hailstorm accompanied by strong winds and heavy downpours destroyed tents set up by vendors for Sunday Market along Session Road.

As seen in videos uploaded by some netizens in the area, some wares and products were swept by rainwater.

In Tublay, Benguet, a farmer shared a clip showing his crops such as cabbages damaged by the downpour.

According to the state weather bureau, there have been instances of hailstorms in the city and Metro Manila.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) meteorologist said higher temperatures can cause faster evaporation of water in the atmosphere and the formation of thunderstorms. Pellets of frozen rain sometimes form inside thunderstorms and fall in showers.
