Culture bearer in Mountain Province honored as GAMABA awardee

Mt. Province, Philippines - Renowned as the “Weaver's Paradise,” Mt. Province has long been celebrated for its exquisite woven, a testament to its vibrant cultural heritage.

Across its municipalities, each showcases a distinctive form of weaving, distinguished by a myriad of colors, styles, and patterns, symbolizing the province's rich artistic legacy.

This ancient craft, however, faces a threat due to the diminishing number of culture bearers. The gradual decline in individuals skilled in this traditional art form has raised concerns about its potential loss.

In response, government initiatives aimed at the preservation and promotion of historical and cultural heritage, indigenous crafts, and traditional artistic expressions offer hope.

These efforts strive to ensure that age-old traditions, including weaving, endure and are transmitted across generations.

Republic Act No. 7355, also known as the Manlilikha ng Bayan Act, serves as the framework for recognizing and honoring GAMABA (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan) awardees, aiming to foster the growth and preservation of traditional folk-art forms by facilitating the allocation of financial resources towards these cultural endeavors.

Amparo Balansi Mabanag, a Ga'dang embroiderer hailing from Paracelis, stands among the esteemed GAMABA awardees for the year, as proclaimed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. through Proclamation No. 427 signed on December 15, 2023.

Mabanag's distinguished recognition stems from her unwavering dedication to safeguarding and promoting the Ga'dang Manu’bak and Ameru traditions, encompassing beadwork and embroidery.

Her tireless efforts in preserving these intricate craft forms have earned her national acclaim, acknowledging her pivotal role in preserving Mt. Province's cultural heritage.

As an awardee, Mabanag embodies the spirit of cultural stewardship, ensuring that the legacy of weaving and indigenous craftsmanship perseveres against the odds, leaving an indelible mark on the province's cultural landscape.

Her accolade not only honors her contributions but also serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to join in the noble pursuit of safeguarding and celebrating the rich cultural heritage that defines the province’s identity.
