405 farmers in Aguinaldo, Ifugao granted quality yellow corn seeds

Aguinaldo, Ifugao – In a bid to increase yellow corn production in Aguinaldo town in Ifugao and consecutively help the country in meeting its demand, the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera granted corn seeds to 405 farmers in the locality.


At present, the government agency reported, local yellow corn production is far below the total requirements of feed millers. To fill in the gap, feed millers opted to import yellow corn and feed wheat from other countries thus, the implementation of the Corn Production Enhancement Program this 2023.

Under the program, farmer-beneficiaries who are registered in the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) and with a corn production area of 0.50 hectares or wider, preferably a member of an active corn cluster organization are eligible for the provision of support services. For those with a wider production area, a maximum of one hectare shall be covered per farmer beneficiary.


On May 10, the local government of Aguinaldo led by Mayor Gaspar Chilagan Jr. hauled the corn seeds from Rizal, Kalinga to the Packing House in Posnaan village where the regional agriculture department turned over the yellow corn seeds to 405 qualified farmers.

According to the municipality through Liaison Officer Ogie A. Potangna, the recipients received one bag of seeds weighing around 7 to 9 kilograms each.


In addition, farmers likewise got 50 kg. bag of fertilizers and three packs each of Bio-N, a microbial-based fertilizer.


The amount of seeds and fertilizers equivalent to the area to be planted by the farmer-beneficiary was determined by the Regional Field Office.


As one of the largest corn producers in the region, Aguinaldo farmers committed to making use of the said grant for the attainment of the program’s goals and objectives.
