Hungduan, Ifugao – In support of the heirloom rice industry of Hungduan in Ifugao, the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera provided P1.46 million worth of agricultural inputs to Agayap Farmer’s Organization of Bokiawan last week.

In a press release, the regional agriculture office explained the provision is under its Sustainable and Inclusive Peace and Reconciliation (SIPAT) program, in coordination with the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Peace Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU).

Aimed at creating livelihood opportunities, the SIPAT is a collaborative program focusing on conflict-vulnerable communities where members of the Cordillera Bodong Administration - Cordillera People Liberation Army (CBA-CPLA) and/or their relatives reside.

The regional department expressed its desire to help in improving heirloom rice production which is being widely planted in said town. It cited that the product is among the region’s “champion commodities” with exceptional aroma, flavor, and cooking qualities.

“According to studies, heirloom rice is more nutritious than white commercial rice… It is highly pigmented and has strong anti-cancer properties,” it added.

As means of boosting said production in the locality, the agency turned over multi-tiller, micro tiller, micro mill, pipes, grab hoes, and organic fertilizers to target recipients.

Meanwhile, Agayap Farmers Organization thanked DA - Cordillera for responding to their agricultural needs.
