Dead body of a barangay official in Cagayan found in canal

Claveria, Cagayan – A 57-year-old barangay official was found dead after he slipped and fell into a water canal in Barangay Nagsabaran, Claveria, Cagayan, according to Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

Richie Roger Hernandez, Police Station Monitoring System (PSMS) and the investigator of the case, narrated that the victim was last seen on the afternoon of September 5, 2022 and was under the influence of alcohol while on his way home before the incident happened.

Based on the initial police investigation, the victim, upon arriving at their house, took his fishing gear and left again. The victim’s wife let her husband leave the house despite his state.

The wife wondered why her husband didn’t return home until the next day. Later, the victim’s child told her mother that he found his father’s fishing gear along the road near a waist-deep water canal.

The victim’s wife, being alarmed, immediately went to the area and found her husband’s cadaver floating in the canal.

She then called for help from the people residing near the place to help her lift the victim’s body. She also informed the authorities about the incident.

To determine if there is any foul play in the incident, the police requested a post-mortem examination on the victim’s cadaver and was confirmed that the victim died because of the injury to his head.

Police concluded that the victim slipped and fell into the ditch and hit his head against the protruding wood in the canal.

Police identified the victim as Roger Mariano, 57, a barangay ‘kagawad’ of said barangay.
