Dead whale found floating in Sta. Ana, Cagayan

Cagayan, Philippines – As the province of Cagayan experienced heavy rain and strong winds, a dead whale was found ashore in Sta. Ana on Monday, May 29, 2023.

Sta. Ana was among the towns in the province that were raised to Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 2 due to Typhoon Betty on said day.

Municipal Agriculturist, Richard Alibania, through the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, mentioned that amidst the typhoon, they were notified by the residents in Centro about a lifeless whale on the coast.

Said mammal was described to be decomposing.

Due to big waves caused by Betty, authorities and the locals were not able to get and bury the whale on Monday. It was also mentioned that the loader cannot accommodate its weight at the time.

The mammal was successfully buried this morning of May 30.

Meantime, while Betty weakens, the local government of Sta. Ana still cautioned evacuees to remain at evacuation centers as some houses in town have been damaged by the typhoon.

Apart from houses, the old locator of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority reportedly collapsed due to strong winds. Damages were estimated at P10,000,000.
