Batanes, Philippines – A dead whale washed ashore in Ivana, Batanes has been disposed of by concerned authorities.

The carcass of a Blainville's Beaked Whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) was discovered by teacher Jurgen Castaño and Ferdinand T. Verso, a National Stock Assessment Program (NSAP) enumerator of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources - Region 2, during their fishing trip at around 5:40 a.m. on Saturday, the bureau in the region reported.

Provincial Fishery Officer (PFO) Ritchie A. Rivera relayed this was the fourth time in his 10-year tenure as PFO to experience marine mammal stranding in the area.

Initial examination conducted on the whale named “Ivana” showed it sustained 15 wounds, six of which measuring about three to four centimeters in diameter were healing. These wounds apparently caused the death of the whale.

The measurement of the whale was not disclosed.

With the heavy equipment provided by the civic groups, the municipal government of Ivana as well as the law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine Coast Guard, the carcass was properly disposed of on the same day.

Dead whales washed up in Batanes raise concern about marine mammal protection.

Local authorities and marine experts assured they will continue monitoring and studying marine mammals to mitigate potential threats and conserve their habitats at the same time.
