Death toll from Abra major quake rises to 10

Abra, Philippines – Following the discovery of the remains of four individuals who were buried in a landslide in Abra, the death toll from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Northern Luzon on Wednesday, July 27, has risen to 10.


The latest four casualties were reported missing at the height of the tremor but later were found.

As narrated by the family of the victims to the police, the casualties were said to have asked permission on Wednesday morning that they be allowed to go to the construction site in Sitio Bangel, Barangay Poblacion Luba to work.


The victims, however, were not able to return home in the evening that day, prompting their families to report them missing.


The police decided to dig up a landslide that occurred in the construction area.


With the help of the K9 sniffing dog of the police, the bodies of the victims were found on Friday afternoon, July 29.

The victims were identified by Luba Municipal Police Station as Mar B. Barreyro, 38, foreman, resident of Sitio Pacpaca, Barangay Ampalioc, Luba, Abra; Louie B. Dining, 21, construction worker, resident of Sitio Madago, Barangay San Ramon East, Manabo, Abra; Jack B. Gamengan, 17, construction worker, resident of Sitio Madago, Barangay San Ramon East, Manabo, Abra, and Angelo A. Badi, 15, of Sitio Madago, Barangay San Ramon East, Manabo, Abra.


Other than the four, a 23-year-old woman was reported to have died in Abra due to a landslide following the quake.

Benguet likewise reported three fatalities and one case of death each from Kalinga and Mountain Province.


Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera said a total of 287 individuals were injured in the region, while 17,434 houses were damaged due to the quake.
