Dengue cases in Cordillera down by 59% this year but with 7 deaths

Baguio City, Philippines—Dengue cases in the Cordillera region are noticeably on a downward trend from January to September this year compared to the same period last year.


The record of the Department of Health Cordillera showed that 5,552 cases of dengue were noted this year, which is 59 percent lower than the 13,563 recorded last year.


The department, however, listed 7 deaths in the region. Last year's record of people who succumbed to the disease was 20.

On other notifiable diseases, the health department said 9 diseases of said kind have increased, also recording deaths.


For Measles Rubella, a 37 percent increase was noted—from 49 cases to 67 cases—while for Pertussis, an increase of 500 percent was observed—from 2 cases in 2022 to 12 this year.


For foodborne and waterborne diseases, acute bloody diarrhea is up by 46 percent, from 708 to 1,031 cases, with one death; acute viral hepatitis, 400 percent, from 1 case to 5 cases; and cholera, a 600 percent increase, with a record of 7 cases this year from one case last year.


For Chikungunya, a 42,66.7 percent increase was observed—from 3 to 1,286 cases. To recall, about 672 cases of chikungunya were recorded in Mt. Province from January to August 2023, which significantly contributed to the record.

For Leptospirosis, a 93 percent increase was noted, from 82 to 158 cases. Death cases also increased, from 6 last year to 13 this year.


Meantime, a 39 percent increase in influenza-like illness was likewise cited—from 3,490 to 4,746—while a 17 percent increase for hand, foot, and mouth disease, from 612 to 716, was listed.


The health department urges the public to immediately consult a doctor if they experience any symptoms of said diseases.
