Dengue cases in Cordillera up by 215 %, 17 deaths from January to August

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Dengue cases in the Cordillera region is up by 215 percent from January 1 to August 20 this year when compared to the same period last year, according to the Department of Health Cordillera.


The region’s record from January to August 20 last year is 3,159 while for same period this year, DOH-CAR documented a total of 9,958 cases.


For its provinces, the agency said the dengue record of Apayao is up by 5,811 percent, Kalinga – 1,069 percent, Ifugao – 808 percent, Baguio City – 117 percent, Benguet – 93 percent, and Mountain Province – 36 percent.


Only the province of Abra was observed to have had a downward trend for its cases as dengue record from last year is down by 61 percent.

Meantime, there were 17 deaths recorded.


Benguet logged the highest number of death cases at 7, followed by Kalinga – 4, Baguio City – 2, and Mt. Province – 2.


With the significant increase in Dengue cases, DOH-CAR urged residents to take necessary precautions, particularly urging the practice of the 4S strategy.


What is the 4S strategy?


The 4S strategy includes; ‘Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites’ or the search and removal of mosquito breeding sites such as empty containers and dirty canals and the ‘Self-protect’ strategy or the wearing of long sleeves, long pants, and the use of mosquito- repellents.

Also included in the strategy are “seek early consultations” strategy and the ‘support fogging or spraying in hotspot areas or places where there is an increase in cases to prevent Dengue outbreaks.


“Ilan sa mga sintomas ng dengue ay lagnat, pagkahilo, pagsusuka, rashes, pananakit ng katawan, pagdurugo ng galagid o ilong. Kapag nakaranas ng mga nabanggit na sintomas, agad magpakonsulta sa doctor,” DOH-CAR stated.
