Tabuk City, Kalinga – The increase in the number of dengue cases in Kalinga province has been observed, raising concerns to put more efforts in combatting the virus - the province logged 1,234 cases from January 1 to July 16, 2022 alone.

This year, four of the total cases died. No casualty was recorded last year.

The figure from the Provincial Health Office is higher by 2,185% compared to the same period last year with only 54 dengue cases.

Most of the dengue cases this 2022 were reported in the City of Tabuk with 550, Rizal with 335, Pinukpuk with 138, Tinglayan with 93, Pasil with 45, Balbalan with 34, Tanudan with 20, while Lubuagan had 19 cases.

Based on the data shown, the PHO emphasized that residents must take precautionary guidelines seriously and intensify the drive against dengue. The public should not only focus on COVID-19 prevention.

Dengue Cases by Age and Sex

Dengue cases in males are higher by 110 than in females.

Children from 1 to 10 years of age were infected the most with 415 cases, followed by the 11 to 20 age group with 403 cases, 21 to 30 years old with 164 cases, over 40 years old with 152 cases, 31 to 40 with 68 cases, and under 1 year old with 32 cases.

Follow the 4S strategy against dengue

The Department of Health, in a press release, earlier reiterated its call for the public to implement the 4S strategy in their own household for dengue prevention.

4S, said the department, stands for “Search and destroy” mosquito-breeding sites; employ “Self-protection measures” by wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and daily use of mosquito repellent, “Seek early consultation,” and “Support fogging/spraying,” only in hotspot areas where the increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.

“The rains have come and it only takes about two weeks for mosquitoes to breed and fully mature into dengue-causing mosquitoes, hence it is time to implement the 4S strategy in our households,” urged Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
