DENR-Cordillera seeks declaration of Pasil Protected Landscape, 2 others as protected areas

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Pasil, Kalinga – In a bid to conserve those under Pasil Protected Landscape in Kalinga, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Cordillera sought the landscape’s declaration as protected area.

The same declaration is being pushed for Tineg Forest Protected Landscape in Abra, and Upper Amburayan Watershed Protected Landscape in Benguet.

As of press time, Cordillera region only two protected areas have legislation – the Banao Protected Landscape Act (RA 11688) and the Mt. Pulag Protected Landscape Act (RA 11685).

“These are just small areas that we want to conserve and protect so that the future generation will have clean water and clean air,” Linda Claire Pawid of DENR – Cordillera stated in a report of the official public information arm of the government in the region.

Pawid earlier described Pasil as one of the hopes of the Philippines with its unique mossy and thick forest. The municipality, she added, is also a carbon sink of Tabuk and even in the whole Cordillera.

During the 1st Quarter Meeting of the Sectoral Committee on Watershed and Environment Management, Pawid said the Regional National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Review Committee already conducted meetings in previous year to tackle the matter.

Their recommendation, she relayed, was submitted to National NIPAS Review Committee.

Part of the steps in declaring a landscape a protected area, in accordance to Expanded NIPAS Act, include compilation of maps, public notification and public hearing, preparation of resources profile, public consultation, protected area plan, public hearing, regional review and recommendation, national review and recommendation, presidential proclamation, congressional action, and the demarcation.

Meantime, the office awaits for the full legislation for the Upper Agno River Basin Resource Reserve.
