DENR-Kalinga assures Buaya, Balbalan on preservation of env’t with proposed hydropower plant

Buaya, Balbalan – With the proposed hydropower project in Buaya, Balbalan, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources assured the community that they are with them in ensuring the preservation of the environment in their place.

The agency conveyed this during the 2nd Consultative Community Assembly (CCA) for the 40 Megawatts Buaya "Mabaca River" Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Buaya on March 28.

Said project is to be redeveloped by JBD Waterpower Inc. (JWPI).

DENR representative, Raymond Mabazza of the City Environment and Natural Environment Resources Office – Pinukpuk explained that the concern of the agency in said project is its negative impact on the environment and natural resources.

“Nu maipanggep iti programa nga daytoy, haan kayo nga madanagan ta adda iti DENR nga kadwa yu. Nu ipalubos yu tu daytoy, adda iti DENR nga kadwa yu nga mangkita iti negative impact na iti environment tayo ken natural resources tayo,” he said.

He added that there shall be an environment development plan to be made should the Buaya HPP will be pursued. This plan will be assessed by the DENR and the proponent will have to comply with measures to address any negative impact on the environment.

He exampled that should the trees be taken down for the project, the JWPI will be required to change them.

Mabazza then asked the cooperation of the community saying, “pagtitinnulungan tayo amin... Dakayu met lang nga constituents, dakayo met lang nga mang-receive ditoy nga project iti maka-ammu nu anya iti problema. Ket sino nga agency iti kayat yu nga mang-address … ibaga yu met laeng.”
