"Diddiga di Tuppaya" winners, performers receive P210,000 cash prize

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Winners, including all other performers of the "Diddiga di Tuppaya", received on Wednesday, February 16, a total of P210,000 cash incentive from the Kalinga provincial government.


"Diddiga di Tuppaya" is a traditional courtship dance that tells a story of community engagement during courtship between a man and a woman. The dance’s inclusion in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage list is being eyed by the tourism department.

As part of the province’s founding anniversary and Bodong Festival’s highlights, the committee led by Governor James Edduba gathered various tribes in the province for a three-day presentation, from February 14 to 16, 2023.


Rizal, Balbalan, and Tabuk City’s Ga’dang tribe presented on the first day, followed by tribes from Pinukpuk, Tanudan, and the Nanong tribe of Tabuk; and Tobog tribe of Tabuk, Pasil, Biga tribe of Tabuk City, and Tinglayan who performed on the second and third day, respectively.


Throughout their performance, each tribe observed the set guidelines. Particularly, there must be two sets of gong players wherein, one set (6 players) should be played by the youth and adults for the other set (6 players).


Two pairs of dancers were also required. One pair (2 players) must come from the youth group and the adult group for the other.


Performers were obliged to wear their own sub-tribal traditional attire appropriately, as part of the mechanics.

Winners


Based on criteria that include choreography (25%), musicality (30%), performance (20%), and ethnicity (25%), the Ga'dang tribe scored the highest, thus seizing the P30,000 cash prize.


Dallac tribe came second with P25,000 prize, while Nanong tribe got P20,000 for settling as third placer.


For the other tribe performers, they were given P15,000 consolation prize each. These include those from Tinglayan, Biga, and Tobog tribes of Tabuk City, Balbalan, Pasil, Pinukpuk, Lubuagan, Tanudan, and Rizal.


Among the committee members for this year’s "Diddiga di Tuppaya" are Vice Governor Jocel Baac; Provincial IPMR, Michael Karel B. Sugguiyao; Head of NCIP-Kalinga, Atty. Catherine Gayagay – Apaling; APBO Eusebio B. Manadao; and Tabuk City IPMR, Sandra A. Uyam, among other stakeholders.
