DILG Sec. to personally monitor Tuguegarao shooting incident to 'ensure that justice is done'

Tabuk City, Kalinga – After learning of the shooting that took place inside a university in Tuguegarao, the secretary of the country’s Department of Interior and Local Government said he would personally monitor the case and ensure that justice would be served.

In a statement Monday, November 20, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos said he was horrified by how the victim was beaten and shot by another student inside Saint Paul University-Tuguegarao, as shown on a widely-shared video online.

As DILG secretary, Abalos declared he will not tolerate any form of violence against women.

He continued by saying he will talk with educators to come up with ideas on how to improve campus safety for students.

Additionally, Abalos anticipates that schools could find ‘better ways to detect troubled or disturbed individuals so that they can intervene sooner.’

He ended his statement by urging the public to rally behind him in an effort to put an end to violence against women and children.

“Sugpuin natin ang karahasan laban sa kababaihan at kabataan alang-alang sa mas makatao at makatarungang lipunan,” Abalos conveyed.

Meanwhile, in an update made by police, they said the victim’s condition is now improving following surgery for a gunshot wound on her neck.

As for the suspect, he was released on bail on November 15.
