Director from Isabela takes home “Best Picture Award” at MMFF 2023

Isabela, Philippines – The recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023 “Gabi ng Parangal” has seen a victorious moment for Isabela-born Director Zig Dulay, whose movie "Firefly" clinched the coveted title of Best Picture.

"Firefly" not only secured said award but also garnered recognition for Euwenn Mikaell, winning Best Child Performer. The film likewise received accolades for Best Screenplay.

In a heartfelt dedication through his Facebook post, Dulay attributed his recent feat to his mother, the guiding force behind his cinematic journey.

Hailing from the city of Santiago in Isabela, Dulay's roots in the heartlands of farming communities have added a poignant layer to his success story.

Dulay's upbringing as the tenth child among 11 siblings has been woven into the fabric of his filmmaking.

His earlier work, "Bambanti," a reflection of his life experiences, mirrored his journey and won accolades at the Brussels International Festival of Films and the Ajyal Youth Film Festival.

"Bambanti" notably featured Alessandra De Rossi, a collaborator who also joined the cast of "Firefly," showcasing the director's consistent engagement with exceptional talent and storytelling.

Apart from his successes in cinema, Dulay's repertoire includes the award-winning GMA Historical-Fantasy series "Maria Clara at Ibarra," further solidifying his prowess in diverse storytelling.

During his acceptance speech, Dulay expressed aspirations for the expansion of cinemas, underlining the film's impact on audiences.

The Metro Manila Film Festival, an annual celebration promoting Filipino cinema, will continue until January 7, 2024, showcasing exceptional talents and stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.
