Distribution of free condoms in Baguio’s night establishments planned to curb increasing HIV cases

Baguio City, Philippines – Alarmed with more residents being infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the Health Services Office of Baguio is set to step up its efforts to curb the spread of such virus.

The city records show an increasing trend in HIV cases, from only 14 in 2020, to 31 in 2021, and 56 in 2022. From January to end of August alone, 34 tested HIV positive. Eight of the cases are within the of 15- to 25-years-old, reported the web-based newswire service of the government.

Among the initiatives being planned by the office is the distribution of free condoms night establishments where the vulnerable populations are. Also, the nightspots will “aggressively” be visited for information campaign.

To prevent the virus from spreading, registered night workers are required to have a weekly check-up at the HSO's social hygiene clinic.

Those who tested positive get enrolled in anti-retroviral treatment (ART), a medical regimen that keeps the amount of virus under control.

HSO officer-in-charge, Dr. Celiaflor Brillantes said they will further heighten their information drive to encourage highly vulnerable individuals to avail of free services such as tests.

“It is important that they know how they can be protected and they are informed of the available services of the government,” stated Brillantes.
