DOH sounds alarm over 78% increase of acute bloody diarrhea in Cordillera

Baguio City, Philippines – Department of Health in the Cordillera Region sounded the alarm over the 78 percent increase in acute bloody diarrhea cases in 2023.

From January 1 to May 20, 2023, the agency recorded 512 cases, while there were only 109 from the same period last year, the PTV Cordillera reported earlier this week.

Acute bloody diarrhea is caused by Escherichia coli, a bacteria that can be found in food and in the environment. A person suffering from the disease experiences abdominal pain and dehydration with watery stool. If left untreated, it can be fatal.

Aside from said disease, the agency also recorded a 40 percent increase in typhoid/paratyphoid fever with 1,125 cases this year.

Influenza-like illnesses likewise rose by 45 percent with 1,278 cases in said period.

The regional department, on the other hand, noted a 25 percent decrease in dengue cases and 10 percent in leptospirosis.

For dengue, only 1,263 were recorded this year, compared to 1,702 last year.

Relative to the provided data, Regional Director, Dr. Rio L. Magpantay of DOH – Cordillera cautioned the public to bolster their immunity to fight off diseases, especially during rainy days.

‘’Napakahalaga kasi ng pagbabantay natin sa ating katawan we keep ourselves warm we keep ourselves away from the rain so bale it means hindi maiwasan ano, kaya yung resistansya natin bumababa kaya prone tayu sa mga ganitong klaseng sakit,‘’ Magpantay said.

He further advised the community to immediately proceed to the hospital or health centers if they happen to feel symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, fever, and others.
