DOLE-Kalinga fulfills plan of Tabuk farmers group to establish bakery business

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – A farmer’s group in Malin-awa can now produce their own bakery products and can now increase their income through the livelihood package from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The Malin-awa Pumiyaan Farmers Association (MPFA) received on Thursday, Sept. 07, start-up equipment and tools through the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP) or Kabuhayan Program.

DILP, the flagship program of DOLE, aims to assist marginalized groups like self-employed people, unpaid family workers, low-wage and seasonal workers, displaced or potential displaced people, marginalized farmers and landless people, marginalized fishermen, women and young people, people with disabilities, senior citizens, indigenous peoples, war victims, rebel returnees, and parents of child laborers.

Through this program, it is expected that the long-term needs of its recipients will be addressed.

For said group in Barangay Malin-awa, they were able to acquire various baking tools and equipment amounting to P513,000, following an onsite inspection, ensuring the business’ feasibility in the area.

Acquired tools and equipment include a spiral dough mixer, a fabricated oven, a dough roller machine, a cooking rack, a stainless steel working table, an electric loaf slicer, an electric coconut grater, a 7-cubic-inch two-door refrigerator, a high-power grinding machine, and ingredients.

With said machines, the possibility of establishing the first bakery shop in said community is now a reality, giving delight to the group’s members.

The association which was formed in 2022 with 96 regular members pledged through its president, Maria Edas, that they would nurture the business to make it grow because it would not only be the first of its kind in the barangay but also because it would provide them the chance to increase their group's income.

To ensure that the group will fulfill their part as beneficiaries, Avelina Manganip, Chief of DOLE-Kalinga said they will conduct quarterly monitoring of the project.
