DOST's Silyang Pinoy benefits 2 schools of Santa Marcela, Apayao

Santa Marcela, Apayao - Consuelo National High School and Consuelo Elementary School of Santa Marcela, Apayao are the only public schools in the Cordillera to be awarded with units of 'Silyang Pinoy.'

Units of 'Silyang Pinoy' for said beneficiaries were turned over on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at the EKB evacuation center in Consuelo, Santa Marcela.

The 'Silyang Pinoy' is a result of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) research in developing school tables and chairs furniture under its Design and Development of Multifunctional School Furniture project which is primarily produced through engineered bamboo or e-bamboo, and other raw materials.

The entity explained that the chairs and tables are convertible in the sense that they may be turned into other furniture. It is designed to be more durable and may serve as an evacuation refuge to protect schoolchildren from catastrophic events.

According to the agency, the potential of bamboo furniture production has long been recognized, as has the need to mainstream its use to support the local economy, thereby assisting the community in establishing new economic possibilities.

Project Leader Engr. Edward Paul Marasigan has stated that said project was only bestowed to 3 identified regions in the country, including Cordillera where the two public schools in Santa Marcela were identified as recipients.

Mayor Evelyn Martinez, along with other municipal officials, as well as the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) staff, Schools Division of Apayao workforce, and barangay officials were in attendance during the event.

Mayor Martinez expressed gratitude to the agency adding that the furniture will be of great help to learners.

“Awan ti agrigat nga taga Santa Marcela no la ketdi ta aggaggaget tayo,” she added in a statement.
