Drunk man fell into river in Cagayan, found dead later

Buguey, Cagayan – While on a drinking spree, an intoxicated man drowned in the Balza River in Buguey after he fell into the water on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023.

He was later found lifeless a day later by authorities.

Prior to the drowning incident, the victim was with his drinking buddies, and their jamming lasted into the night on said date.

He later told his companions that he just needed to wash his hands in the river, which was adjacent to where they were having their drinking spree.

As he was under the influence of alcohol at the time, police said he might have lost his balance, resulting in him falling straight into the water, where he completely drowned.

Accordingly, after his friends noticed he was nowhere to be found, they tried searching for the victim, but he was not found that night.

On Wednesday, September 13, a team from the Coast Guard and MDRRMO Buguey conducted an underwater search operation.

This resulted in them locating the victim’s body 80 meters away from where he drowned.

The recovered body was positively identified as that of Joel Donato, 43, a resident of the aforementioned place. His identity was confirmed by his own daughter.

Meanwhile, police said there was no foul play in the incident.
