Elusive potato diggers steal 800 kilos from farms in Mt. Province and Benguet

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Potatoes seem to be one of the targets of thieves in the region after two farms lost over 800 kilograms of their produce to these potato diggers.


These recent incidents transpired in Bauko, Mountain Province and Mankayan, Benguet between the evening of December 7 and early hours of December 8, 2023.


In Bauko, 200 – 300 kilograms of potatoes were dug up at a farm in Balicanao, Sadsadan, leaving the farmer owner with an estimated loss of P25,000. It is believed that a number of individuals stole the potatoes at said plantation.


The same incident happened to a farmer in Balili who lost around 500 kilograms of his crops to individuals who stole his potatoes by digging them up. This is equivalent to P50,000 worth of losses.


People behind the stealing are yet to be known.


Potatoes can be pricey in the market during this period of the year.


White potatoes, according to the Bantay Presyo Monitoring of the Department of Agriculture this November 27 – December 1, are being sold for P154.86 per kilo.


This is P19 higher than the price two weeks ago.
