Endangered green sea turtle from Malaysia accidentally caught in Gonzaga, Cagayan

Gonzaga, Cagayan - A green sea turtle, believed to have originated from Malaysia, was accidentally caught by a fisherman in Gonzaga, Cagayan on Friday, July 5, 2024.

 

Based on the information shared by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region II, the turtle was accidentally netted by Rene Flores using his "sapyaw" while he was fishing along the Gonzaga Sea.

 

Upon examination, it was discovered that the turtle is from Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia based on a tag with the code MY(S) 133344 on its left fin.

 

The sea turtle was found to be on the list of endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.


After necessary checks, the sea turtle was successfully released by the DENR on Sunday, July 7. A code PH 2181B was tagged to its right flipper before the turtle was released along the shoreline.
