Endangered PH serpent eagle on road to recovery after rescue in Apayao

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

Apayao, Philippines – The Philippine serpent eagle rescued on Sept. 25 in Apayao is now on the road to recovery.

The serpent eagle belongs to the 'protected animals' and has a conservation status of ‘endangered species’ or vulnerable to extinction, as earlier reported by the public information arm of the national government.

Concerned citizens in Pudtol, Apayao found the eagle last week, wounded on its right foot as a result of an attempt to catch it. Its state prompted the citizens to report it to the Municipal Agriculture Office where it was examined by Dr. Divine Biton.

With Biton’s initial assessment, the serpent eagle was later turned over to the care of Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office.

According to the Provincial Veterinary Office, through the provincial information, the bird is now responding well to treatment and will be freed back to wildlife once it is completely healed.

In 2015, the first Philippine Eagle nest in Luzon island was found in the virgin forests of Apayao, particularly in Luna town.

Two years after, the province was recognized as the new sanctuary of Philippine eagle.
