Entrepreneur from Lagawe, Ifugao turns heirloom rice into ice cream

Updated: Sep 19, 2022

Lagawe, Ifugao – Instead of serving the indigenous heirloom rice as usual, an entrepreneur from Lagawe, Ifugao thought differently and made ice cream from it.

Heirloom rice is said to be a special kind of indigenous rice that was bequeathed by upland ancestors. It is colored, glutinous, and possesses an outstanding quality, aroma, texture, taste, and nutritional value.

With the low consumption of heirloom rice in the locality, Nica Magdalena Tuguinay of Lagawe decided to make ice cream from it and made it as her provincial entry in the 2022 Young Farmers Challenge (YFC).

Taguinay, through Department of Agriculture-CAR press release, said heirloom rice products are mostly sold outside their place as ‘pasalubung’ of visiting tourists.

The situation gave her an idea to innovate and come up with a unique product.

“Yung ice cream po kasi, pwedeng pang-snacks or dessert lalo sa mga bata dahil mahilig po sila doon, she added.

She relayed that her family has been into local ice cream production and her experience aided her in her heirloom ice cream enterprise. She used heirloom rice as a substitute for starch, the main ingredient in ice cream.

Taguinay’s entry won at the provincial level, receiving a P50,000 cash grant as start-up capital that she can utilize for her business improvement as she vies for the regional level competition.

She then expressed gratitude to the agriculture department for their interventions in boosting young farmers’ agri-entrepreneurial skills that help their proposed industry prosper and promote food sustainability.
