Ex-cop and Mayoral candidate arrested for drug smuggling attempt

Sadanga, Mountain Province - Among the 5 individuals arrested during the anti-drugs operation in the province on October 13, 2021, is a former member of the Philippine National Police and a candidate for Mayoralty of Sabangan, Mt. Province.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Cordillera revealed this in a press release, identifying the suspect as a certain Sonny Kalaw, 36, a native of Barangay Data, Sabangan.

The Information Office of PNP-Mt. Province reports that at around 7:30 AM of October 13, a black Hi-ace Grandia van containing 19 Marijuana bricks was intercepted 3 kilometers away from Sitio, Ampawilen checkpoint.

The suspected contraband is estimated to weigh 19 kilograms with a street value of P2,280,000.

Other individuals arrested were identified as Jonathan Fomanos Abella, 37, a government employee from Barangay Gawana, Barlig; Jeric Arzadon Sansano, 30, a construction worker from Bonfal East, Nueva Viscaya but presently residing at Barangay Fuyayeng, Bontoc; Samson Amiling Damaso, 28, a native of Tadian, but presently residing at Barangay Samoki, Bontoc; and a minor. They all came from Mt. Province.

Arrested individuals and confiscated pieces of evidence were brought to the Sadanga Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition, while the minor was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development of Sadanga.

Violation of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against the arrested suspects.

PDEA CAR Regional Director Gil Castro urged the public to be vigilant as he vowed to safeguard Cordillera from any narco-politicians.
