Ex-mayor linked to the killing of Ilagan Prosecutor Begtang in 2021 surrendered

Conner, Apayao – After learning that a warrant of arrest has been issued against him for a murder case, the former mayor of Conner, Apayao who has been linked to the killing of a deputy prosecutor in Ilagan voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Wednesday, November 16.


Former Mayor Leonardo Dangoy was among the suspects facing a murder case relative to the killing of Deputy Prosecutor of Ilagan City, Victor Begtang, a resident of Sitio Hanhan, Barangay Malama Conner.


The murder case has been filed by the complainant before the Department of Justice, according to PNP Apayao.


At present, Dangoy is now in police custody while waiting for the commitment order of the court.


PNP Apayao relayed the gunman was already nabbed in Kalinga while the 2 other suspects are still being hunted.


As recalled, Ilagan City Former Deputy Prosecutor, Victor Begtang was shot dead at his auto shop, in Sitio Hanhan, Barangay Malama Conner afternoon of June 23, 2021.

It was said that Begtang was at the auto shop for the repair of his truck with his two workers when the shooting incident transpired.


In the investigation made, it was known that Begtang, together with his workers, was having their coffee when the prosecutor saw a gunman - at least 50 meters away targeting him.


The victim immediately instructed his laborers to run in different directions while he dashed toward his house. However, while running, he met another gunman making him retreat.


He was then cornered and shot multiple times.


Begtang was ferried to Conner District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.


The suspects, meantime, fled the area heading towards Malama Poblacion using a motorcycle.

Statement of the witnesses


Begtang’s companions later revealed they initially saw the second gunman entering their shop but did not inform Begtang as they were taken by fear.


The witnesses said Begtang did not notice the second suspect as he was in between two trucks during the repair and the time the second gunman positioned himself.


The surrender is hoped to provide more information towards the solution of the case.
