Family in Baguio hailed as “Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino”

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Baguio City, Philippines – A family from the City of Pines was hailed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development as the “Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino” on Monday, October 10, 2022 at the DSWD Central Office.

Adjaro family from Santo Tomas Proper, Baguio City, received a plaque of recognition and P50,000 cash incentive from the agency for winning the said search.

“Natatanging Pamilyang Pilipino” aims to recognize families that have upheld and demonstrated Filipino values in their way of life, maintaining family cohesiveness and well-being despite the challenges.

The search is in line with the celebration of the 30th National Family Week held last week of September.

Adjaro family, along with other participating families, submitted before the agency the requirements that include accomplished nomination form that contains a profile of the family, activities, awards received, community participation, records of accomplishments; a write-up of not more than 1,000 words with family photos; and conforme of the family.

The families are then ranked based on those who demonstrated how to be stable (matatag), comfortable (maginhawa) and have a peaceful life (panatag na buhay) through their resilience, courage, and strength in the face of hardship.

The family of Adjaro was awarded a plaque and a P10,000 cash incentive for winning the regional level last month.

The family again prevailed in the nationwide contest, thus, their additional incentives.

As the winning family, Adjaro will help promote the goals of the National Committee on the Filipino Family and Filipino family values and will serve as resource persons during family-related activities.

The story of Adjaro family

Below is the story of Adjaro family, as relayed by DSWD-Cordillera:

“Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Martina Adjaro met in Baguio in 1976. Bound by love, faith, and commitment, the couple got married and started their family life which was blessed with six (6) children.

Determined to provide their children with a bright future, the couple patiently wrestled with the hardships of life. Johnny continued to work as a secondary school teacher, while Martina had to stop working as a midwife to attend to the needs of the family at home.

Having a big family had been a challenge for the couple, especially in sending the children to school; hence, they doubled their effort by engaging in farming, planting highland vegetables, raising dairy cows and pigs. These additional sources of income for the family became instrumental in financing the educational expenses of their children. The children also did their part as they qualified for different scholarships.

However, the family’s smooth sailing journey was struck by a big wave when one of their children got pregnant while still attending school. She was then full of despair at the thought of failing her parents. But the couple did not make her feel that way; instead, they encouraged her to keep going. After years of sacrifices, all of their children were able to graduate- two of them are now engineers, one is a financial manager, one followed the footstep of their father as a teacher, one is a nurse, and the other one is an entrepreneur. The success of their children manifests the domineering but tenderhearted parenting role of Johnny and Martina.

While being hands on with their children, the couple did not forget to give back to their community as the family is known to engage in community and civic activities, and lending a hand to those who are in need.

The pandemic did not hamper the family to continue strengthening their family’s bond. They took advantage of the work from home set-up and the use of technology to maintain open communication, and spiritual sharing among the members.”
