Family of international student from Ifugao who died in Australia road crash appeals for help

Ifugao, Philippines – The family and friends of a young international student from Ifugao who died in a road accident appeal for assistance to bring her remains back home. 

Frances Jeyann Ramirez from Lamut was taking a Bachelor of Science in Health major in Clinical Nutrition in Australia and was supposed to graduate in 2024 when she got involved in a vehicular traffic incident.

According to reports, Ramirez was hit by two cars at the intersection of Hallenstein Street and Hopkins Street in Footscray, an inner-city suburb in Melbourne around 10 p.m. of November 25, 2023.

Paramedics tried to revive her, unfortunately, she did not make it.

Ramirez just turned 22 three weeks before the accident.

Awaiting repatriation

In her interview with The STAR, the victim’s mom, Mayne Ramirez revealed they struggle to bring her remains home.

She said they already reached out to the Department of Foreign Affairs where the agency directed them to the Overseas Citizen Affairs office. They were required to secure a Special Power of Attorney to authorize a friend in Australia to handle necessary arrangements.

However, they declined the assistance when they found out they would only get aid and the required papers were not for the repatriation of the 22-year-old from Australia to the Philippines.

Filipino-Australian Student Council of Victoria (FASTCO), in a Facebook post, described Ramirez to be a great daughter, student, and friend to her fellow international students.

The said group, through the spirit of Bayanihan, initiated a fundraising to help bring Ramirez’s remains back to the Philippines.
