Fare hike requested by transport groups in CAR takes effect this July 1

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Baguio City Philippines- The request for a fare hike by transport groups in the cordillera amid the oil price hike was granted by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Wednesday, June 29.

The fare hike took effect on Friday, July 1.

Through a notice by the agency, the board granted the motion to consolidate petitions for fare increase into a single petition dated June 16.

They likewise granted the provisional increase of fare rates for PUJ services across all regions.

Traditional public jeepneys nationwide are allowed to provisionally increase the minimum fare to P11 from P9 and P10, depending on what the regional authorities allow.

Modern public jeepneys nationwide are authorized to increase the fare to P13 from P12 currently for the first four kilometers.

Even with the fare hike, LTFRB said senior citizens, persons with disability (PWDs), and students are entitled to a 20% discount.

As recalled, transport groups in the region had been waiting for the decision of the LTFRB on their request for a fare hike to help them cope with the impact of fuel price hikes.

According to Pat Evangelista, president of the association of transport groups in the cordillera and region 1, they were expectant that the LTFRB will notice their request, especially that price of oil has increased again.

He added that if there is no fare increase, there is a possibility that more drivers will stop operating.

Evangelista said that only 30% to 40% of drivers in the region are currently on the roads to provide services to public commuters.
