Fire destroys school in Benguet; classes might be disrupted


Itogon, Benguet - Two school buildings of the Laurencio Memorial National High School (LNFHS) -Annex Bantic High School in Dalupirip, Itogon was hit by a fire on Sunday morning, August 22, 2021.


Fortunately, no casualties were reported as it was also hindered by an ongoing pandemic.


Since the incident might affect their upcoming classes this year, which is set to start on September 13, 2021, a possible reconstruction is proposed.


According to the incident report of Benguet Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC), a fault in the circuit line wirings may have caused the fire which started at the main building of the said school.

The residents from five houses near the incident were advised by the authority to evacuate.


Meanwhile, Congressman Eric Yap informed that he spoke


with Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua to seek funds for the rehabilitation of the school, but if there wouldn’t be enough funds, the budget for the school will be included in the 2022 funds.


Yap said that the reconstruction will be taken in action as soon as possible since the school was a symbol of hope, especially to the students living in remote areas of the municipality.

He then assured that the LFNHS Bantic Annex will rise up before the approval of face-to-face classes for the education of the young.


A temporary learning facility is yet to be discussed by the officials of the municipality.


Recalling the same month of the year 2020, a fire incident happened in Benguet, affecting two houses leaving sixteen families homeless in the province.
