Baguio City, Philippines – Firework-related injuries in the Cordillera region is now at 22.

The Department of Health - Cordillera reported this as a result of its monitoring made from December 21, 2022, to January 4, 2023.

Said figure is 144 percent higher than the record for the same period in 2021-2022 in which only 9 cases were logged.

Of the overall injuries, Abra has the most number of victims with 7, followed by Kalinga with 6, Baguio City with 5, and Mt. Province and Benguet with 2 cases each.

Due to the increasing number of victims, the department reminds the public not to pick up unexploded fireworks with bare hands.

Instead of doing this, they are told to ‘carefully transfer the unexploded fireworks using a broom and dustpan or any similar tool to a bucket of water.’

Further, if a person became a victim of a firework-related injury, the agency urges them ‘to seek immediate medical attention, as these may lead to complications arising from tetanus and other infections.’
