First cochlear implant in CAR performed on baby with hearing loss

Baguio City, Philippines – A one-year-and-six-month-old baby with hearing loss benefited from the first Cochlear Implant in Cordillera region.


Public Information Office - City of Baguio, in a press release, reported that the successful operation was performed by the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center – Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery on June 10, 2022.

The surgery, according to Dr. Jefferson Peckley, involves the installation of the cochlear implant, an electronic device designed to produce hearing sensations by electrically stimulating nerves inside the inner ear.


Three weeks after the surgery, the electronic device will be activated. The patient, by then, will begin a new journey, being able to hear better.


Among those who performed the surgery are surgeons Peckley and Norberto V. Martinez, Anesthesiologist Pryl K. Ngoslab, and Clinical Audiologists Hubert Ramos, Krysteene Sonale Cruz and Ultima Angela Alparce.
