First gender-sensitive restroom in PH public schools inaugurated in Aguinaldo, Ifugao

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Aguinaldo, Ifugao – Pupils of Ubao National High School in Aguinaldo, Ifugao belonging to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual, and others (LGBTQIA+) can now enjoy the newly-built gender-sensitive comfort room.

This is following the turnover ceremony and inauguration of the facility held Monday, March 20, 2023, at said secondary school.

The first fruit of “Project HANDOG (Hygienic and Opulent Restrooms for Girls) para kay Juana sa Cordillera” of the Department of Education in the region may be the first gender-sensitive facility in public schools in the whole country, DepEd – Cordillera in its press release said.

The project, it added, was conceptualized under the infrastructure umbrella of the Salaknib tan Namnama Program of the regional education department aimed at providing hygienic and comfortable restrooms for girls and the LGBTQIA+.

Following the ceremonial groundbreaking on July 22 last year, the first-of-its-kind facility which costs almost P800,000 was finished in eight months through the whole-of-community method, DepEd – Cordillera Director Estela P. Leon - Cariño stressed.

Equipped with complete amenities such as a shower area, sanitary pads, and an adequate supply of water, among others, learners belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community would feel a safer environment.

"We want our learners to feel that the government cares for them by giving you comfortable facilities to boost your interest in going to school," said Cariño.

Meanwhile, Mayor Gaspar B. Chilagan Jr. is beyond grateful to DepEd – Cordillera for choosing Ubao NHS as its first project recipient.

"We work together for societal transformation leading to the development of learners that eventually contribute towards economic stability of the community," he expressed.

Ubao NHS personnel likewise extended their gratitude and further committed for the proper maintenance of the restrooms for girls and LGBTQIA+ community.

Earlier, other schools in the Cordillera region have signified their intention to follow Ubao NHS in setting up facilities for members of said community.
