2 police dogs in CAR given recognition as they retire from service

Baguio City, Philippines – After years of service to Cordillerans, two police dogs were honored by the Police Regional Office – Cordillera on their retirement on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, in La Trinidad, Benguet.


Balsy and Zeus, both Belgian Malinois, have played an important part of the police force.


Balsy, according to PRO-Cor, is the first police dog to serve the in the region. He served as a K9 contingent during the visit of the VIP in Baguio. He was also deployed to the different parts of the region as part of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and K9 teams, securing special events such as regular and special holidays and fiestas. Before his retirement, he was regularly deployed at Harrison Road, Baguio City to secure night market goers.

He was conferred with Certificates of Recognition for his nine years of service as an Explosive and Detection Dog (EDD).


Zeus, who served for seven years as a Search and Rescue Dog (SARD), was given the same accolade and Outstanding Service Medal for his outstanding performance as a rescue dog that contributed to the recovery of two victims during the landslide at Antamok River in Itogon, Benguet, from August 17 to 20, 2021.


The handlers of Balsy and Zeus - PMSg Arman Acangan and Pat Cyrus Backeng were likewise recognized with Certificate of Commendation for guiding and training the canines.


After their retirement, the dogs will be sent to their new homes to be provided by other police personnel who will adopt them.


3 retiring cops honored

Meanwhile, PRO-Cor likewise honored three retiring cops - PCOL Davy Vicente Limmong of Ifugao Police Provincial Office (PPO), PLT Maurice Ligtinen of Baguio City Police Office, and PEMS Carmelo Tadeo of Abra PPO.


The three were presented the Medalya ng Paglilingkod (PNP Service Medal) and Plaque of Appreciation for their dedication and immeasurable commitment to the police service.


Certificates of recognition were also given to the families of the retirees as an expression of appreciation for their unending support, selfless love, and sacrifices for the retiring cops.


The awarding was graced by Regional Director, Officer-In-Charge, PBGEN Patrick Joseph Allan and Deputy Regional Director for Operation, PCOL Ronald Gayo.
