Fishing and selling of ‘ludong’ during spawning season is prohibited in Cagayan

Updated: Oct 12, 2022

Cagayan, Philippines – People who are caught selling and fishing for ‘ludong’ in Cagayan during its spawning season from October 1 to November 15 this year shall be penalized.

Ludong also called as the ‘President’s Fish’ is the most expensive fish in the Philippines ranging from P4,000 – P5,000 per kilogram. This fish is found in the Cagayan River and Santa-Abra River System of Ilocos Sur and Abra.

The fish is likewise said to be an endangered fish species in the country.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 2 Director Angel Encarnacion, through Cagayan Public Information Office, said that the closing of the fishing season for ludong aims at giving time for the fish to breed.

She further explained that it is from October to November that ludong goes to the estuary of Aparri from the Upper stream to spawn.

To implement the closed fishing season for ludong program, BFAR region 2 personnel are patrolling the areas of Gattaran, Amulong, and Aparri.

Any individual who is caught selling and fishing ludong within the said season may face 6 – 8 years of imprisonment, pay P80,000 as a fine, and may have their permit or license cancelled.

After November 15, when the closed fishing season is over, Encarnacion still appeals to the public not to catch pregnant ludong and allow them to breed.
