Flora suffers P74.6M agricultural damage; Mayor Juan pushes for immediate aid to affected farmers


Flora, Apayao- The municipality of Flora recorded P74,634,000.00 worth of agricultural damage on High Value Crops (HVC), with most of the destruction experienced in Banana plantations due to Typhoon Marce.


Report from Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) showed 189 farmers from Barangays San Jose, Santa Maria, and Tamalunog cultivating over 298.50 hectares of bananas have been affected and have lost yield of about 3,361 metric tons of their projected produce this coming harvest season.


Among the municipalities in Apayao, Flora reported the greatest losses in terms of Banana farming.


The LGU’s MDRRMC final report on damage assessment revealed Banana fruits ruined were mostly Lakatan, all of them were still in their reproductive stage valued at a farmgate of 45 pesos.  


According to one of the affected farmers in town, it usually takes more or less than a year for a Banana plant to recover, and this means lean period will take longer because of the devastation of TY Marce to their major source of livelihood.


Nevertheless, Mayor Rodolfo B. Juan has been working to provide the necessary support and intervention to aid the affected farmers, collaborating closely with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other government agencies for rehabilitation programs.

As for relief operations, the Local Government Unit led by Mayor Juan immediately reached affected farmer-families.


In his previous talks, the Mayor assured farmers to augment the provision of assistance to the affected agricultural sector, apart from the social services already handed over to them.
