Flora wins Say-am Fest 2023 float competition

Luna, Apayao – The grand float parade, one of the most awaited events for this year’s Say-am Festival, concluded on Friday, February 10, with the municipality of Flora bringing home the top prize.


Made of indigenous materials as the competition required, seven floats were shown off first in the streets of Luna thru a parade while it ferried the ‘Dayag di Apayao’ candidates along with some locals dressed in native attire.


These were later displayed at the grounds of the Apayao Eco-Tourism and Sports Complex in San Gregorio, Luna where spectators were given the chance to take pictures.

There, the judging was also held and awarding followed.


Alongside the event was the awarding of housing units to 10 beneficiaries from Pudtol and Kabugao towns, and livelihood grants to selected beneficiaries.


A masterpiece as they called it, the float of the Floranians which was made out of corn, bamboo, and cogon grass filled with local produce of the municipality- from fruits, root crops, and vegetables wowed the judges and rated it 98.2.


With this, they took home a total amount of P100,000.


Calanasan depicting the LAPAT system –an indigenous way of conserving natural resources, was declared first runner-up garnering a score of 97 from the judges, and got a cash prize of P80,000.

Ranking third is Sta. Marcela which depicted its title, the ‘cassava basket’ of Apayao, getting an amount of P60,000. It was scored 95.6 by the judges.


Consolation prizes which amount to P50,000 each were then awarded to the remaining four municipalities - Pudtol, Conner, Luna, and Kabugao.


The float parade was graced by Congressman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, Governor Elias Bulut Jr., other officials of the province, and guests from neighboring provinces.
