Atok forest fire ravages acres of land; Northern Blossom Flower Farm now under smog

Benguet, Philippines – Planning for a getaway in Atok, Benguet? You might want to reconsider.

Atok is a popular go to destination due to its tourist spots and freezing temperature. However, the town has been hit by forest fire which broke out in Barangay Topdac on February 4. Due to strong winds, the fire rapidly spread across Halsema Highway in Barangay Caliking and other areas.

Fires in Atok and neighboring municipalities such as Itogon, Bokod, Tuba and Kabayan pose risks and threats to the tourism industry.

The Northern Blossom Flower Farm, which is among the top tourist attraction in Cordillera region due to its flowers arranged in a stunning display and scenic backdrop, advised visitors to ‘plan accordingly.’

“Due to the ongoing forest fire near our area, Northern Blossom Flower Farm is now covered in smog. Smoke from the fire is covering our area... Individuals with respiratory problems such as asthma are advised to visit us some other time,” stated the farm’s management through its social media post.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and hope for your understanding,” it added.

The Bureau of Fire Protection – Cordillera has so far recorded 63 forest fires, resulting in the destruction of over 300 hectares of forests in Baguio and in the province of Benguet from January 1 to February 23.
