Forest fire ravages Atok and Bokod, Benguet

Benguet, Philippines - While the forest fires in Itogon are still ongoing, another forest fire has swept through Barangay Caliking, Atok, Benguet, fueled by strong winds, posing a significant threat to the surrounding areas.

According to reports from Atok Mayor Franklin Smith, the fire broke out at around 9:30 on Sunday, February 4.

Smith stated that while efforts were made to contain the blaze, the intensity of the wind contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, making it difficult to predict its direction and contain its advance.

Further, the volatile nature of the fire posed a grave risk to residents and properties in its path, prompting authorities to issue warnings and evacuation orders to ensure the safety of the community.

Mayor Smith emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring and coordination among various agencies, including the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and other stakeholders.

As of now, there have been no reported casualties from the forest fire. However, the situation remains critical as firefighters continue to battle the blaze amidst challenging conditions.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Bokod is also conducting monitoring and investigation into a recent fire incident in Sitios 9 and 10, Barangay Ekip.

According to Senior Fire Officer 4 Leo Daniel Lardizabal, Officer-in-Charge of the said bureau, the fire occurred on February 2 but was only reported to their office on February 3.

Residents were quick to respond to the fire, but due to the remote location and difficult terrain, accessing the site proved to be a challenge. Despite their efforts, the fire rekindled the following day, exacerbated by strong winds and dry weather conditions.

The rugged terrain and limited personnel further complicated firefighting efforts, making it challenging to establish fire lines and contain the blaze.

Nevertheless, authorities are committed to providing assistance and support to affected residents, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation and proactive measures in preventing and addressing fire emergencies.
