Former DSWD Asec. Peñaflor tells IPs to defend themselves against cultural bastardization

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

Tanudan, Kalinga − Former Department of Social Welfare and Development Assistant Secretary Rhea Peñaflor urged the Indigenous Peoples in Tanudan and in Kalinga to speak up when their culture and practices are being bastardized.

The former secretary was an invited guest speaker to the first IP month celebration by the Municipality of Tanudan on October 26, 2022, at Banagao, Poblacion.

“’Pag binabastos na kayo, i-call niyo na yung attention kasi yung tradisyon niyo ay kumbaga bina-bastardized na,” Penaflor asserted while delivering her talk explaining the importance of standing up against actions that demean or change ones cultural practices.

Peñaflor, now the Chief of the Party of the YouthWorks PH, also encouraged the yTanudans to continue in their work to preserve their culture including their language, elders’ teaching, music, dances, delicacies, policies, and cultural attires.

She recommended putting these into writing in order to for the next generations to have concrete references.

“Kapag naisulat niyo po kasi, maga-guide ang ating mga kabataan, yung next generation at hindi rin mawawala yung mga itinuro ng inyong mga ninuno,” she said.

Peñaflor left the constituents of Tanudan with 4Ps to remember in order to preserve and ensure that the rich culture of the municipality will reach the future generation. These 4Ps are ‘Pagpapahalaga sa kultura, Pagsasabuhay, Pagmamahal, and Pagpapalaganap sa pamamagitan ng adbokasiya.’
