4 Cordilleran beach goers drown in La Union

Updated: Dec 29, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – Swimming on the beach post-Christmas Day turned into a tragedy for the families of four individuals from the Cordillera Region.

The four victims include a 12-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl from Benguet; and 19 and 21-year-old individuals from Baguio City. All of them reportedly drowned on a beach in San Juan, La Union on December 26 and 27.

December 26 incident

On December 26, the 12 and 9-year-old kids from Benguet were swimming in Barangay Taboc when they were allegedly swept by big waves, causing them to drown.

Responders were able to get the 12-year-old boy out of the water, but he was declared dead on arrival at the Bacnotan District Hospital, the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported.

The younger victim, on the other hand, is still being searched by authorities to this date.

Another drowning on Dec. 27

Following the incident on December 26, another drowning happened in Barangay Urbiztondo in the same town. The case involved 19 and 21-year-old residents of Baguio City.

The body of the 19-year-old victim was recovered around 8:20 a.m. on December 28 while his companion is yet to be found.

Water activities suspended

Municipal Mayor Arturo Valdriz, meantime, suspended all water activities in San Juan on December 27. This is amidst the Amihan winds being experienced in the municipality which pose danger to beachgoers.

“This extraordinary water condition in the municipal sea waters poses risk to our beachgoers which could lead to drowning,” the mayor wrote through Executive Order No. 23 – 2023.
