Pasil, Kalinga – A total of 13,500 tilapia fingerlings and 148.5 bags of feeds amounting to P168,750 were recently given free to 61 Pasil fisherfolk aiming to increase fishpond productivity to ensure sufficient fish supply in this town.

The distribution of free fingerlings and feeds is under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) in coordination with the local government of Pasil through the Office of the Municipal Agricultural Services (OMAS).

Rewards scheme

Of the 61 beneficiaries, 49 received their share in a form of rewards. Rewards, according to Aquaculture Officer I Clifford Fernandez, are given to fisherfolk that reported their venture output based on their project given last year.

“Naulit da lang nga naikkan, mga 50% to 80% based on their output,” Fernandez said.

22 fisherfolk who were given rewards are from Galdang, another 22 from Guina-ang, 3 from Pugong, and 2 from Balinciagao Norte.

A total of 10.25 units were given as rewards to the beneficiaries. Each unit is composed of 1,000 fingerlings and 11 bags of feeds. One unit costs P12,500.

New techno-demo beneficiaries

Meanwhile, 3.25 units with the same component and price were distributed to 12 new technology demonstration (techno-demo) beneficiaries.

“Dagituy dagiay kaar-aramid ti fishpond na nga na-grant-an ti new techno-demo, nu mayat ti apit da ket ma-rewardan da,” Fernandez stressed.

Distribution of fingerlings

The aquaculturist officer related that the unit given to the beneficiaries varies from the fishpond area. He said that 1 unit is given for those with 200 square meters of pond area.

“Nu kuma ti fishpond mo ket 200 square meters, bagim kuma diay 1 unit so bagim diay 11 bags of feeds ken 1,000 fingerlings ngem nu basbassit diay area’m, nu kuma 50 square meter, siyempre gudwaen ta diay feeds and fingerlings nga umanay sakto idiay area’m kasdiay su medyo adu naikkan,” Fernandez explained.

Pasil Strategy

The aquaculturist added that Assistant Municipal Agriculturist, Engr. Victor A. Aglipay devised a strategic plan to ensure that all qualified fisherfolk in the municipality will be given.

“Kunan ni sir Victor Aglipay ‘maymayat a maramanan da kaysa adda maited nga agpaysu a kompleto diay maysa tao ngem awan met idiay bangir su ti inkasta na, ginudwa-gudwa na uray saggabassit da, importante adda ti ma-receive da,” Fernandez said.

Identification of beneficiaries

According to the aquaculturist officer, upon creation and registration of their fishpond, the beneficiaries then approached the Municipal Agriculturist and proposed to be included in said program.

BFAR-Kalinga and Pasil LGU then validated the applicants if their ponds qualified. Training and orientation were then given for the recipients to understand their role and part to ensure sustainable partnership with the LGU and BFAR.

“Adda met laeng ti training a maisuru nu kasanu agtaraken ti lames,” Fernandez said.

The fisherfolk were given 2 weeks to apply what was discussed during the training and to prepare their ponds. Revalidation or inspection was then conducted to verify whether elements and recommendations were applied before their inclusion in the program.

‘Hope of success’

In her message, Provincial Fishery Officer Joyce Ducyogen expressed hope that the beneficiaries would succeed to attain the government’s goal of the program.

“Diay kayat mi ket mag-succeed lahat nang products doon and then ang number 1 aalagan yung mga binigay, pagbalinen da a negosyo diay tapnu diay arapaap ti government a rumay-ay panagbiag ti farmers and fisherfolks ket ma-attain,” Ducyogen stated.
