Former Apayao military leader named Phil. Army Vice Commander

Apayao, Philippines – A military general who led the campaign against armed conflict in the provinces of Apayao and Cagayan is now the new Vice Commander of the Philippine Army.


Brigadier General Steve Crespillo was named as the 36th Vice Commander of the Philippine Army on January 20 at Fort Santigao in Metro Manila, the 5th Infantry Division announced.

As Vice Commander, Crespillo shall serve as chairman of various boards and committees of the Philippine Army. His role includes oversight functions on key policies, plans, and programs.


Prior to his new appointment, he was the Commander of the 501st Infantry Brigade. He led the military troops to end the local communist armed conflict in Apayao and Cagayan.


Under his command, the East and West Guerilla Fronts of the Komiteng Probinsya Cagayan, Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley were dismantled. Likewise, most of the barangays in Cagayan were reportedly cleared of the influence of insurgents.

In his years in the army, Crespillo served as the Chief of the Unified Command Staff of the Western Mindanao Command; Chief of Staff and Assistant Division Commander for Reservist and Retiree Affairs of the 6th Infantry Division; and Acting Commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade.


Crespillo belonged to the Philippine Military Academy “Bigkis-Lahi” Class of 1990.
